Nov 3, I’ve had very similar thoughts about the whole Matchmaking thing in the Destiny series, and I thought I’d chime in with some ideas that I’ve observed over time as Destiny has evolved. I come from a very heavy MMO background as well so the idea of the game not having chat or an LFG system built into the game was baffling to me and a huge deterrent for me enjoying the game during Year 1. This presents unique challenges as there are some positives that come from the situation they have made as well as the negatives I’m sure many of us have all encountered.

The main thing that sticks out to me is that having the player leave their comfort zone somewhat to gain passage into doing a harder activity can lead to bolstering the community as a whole. An example of this could be the original DestinyGAF community. When people realized they couldn’t do the Weekly Heroic Strikes with matchmaking, the first thing they did was jump online and meet some people that they could try it with. There was a lot of failures, but when the successes happened, those players tended to stick together.

The more and more players stuck together after meeting each other was what started the community itself. It only got bigger as people started to lead newer players through content and bring them into the fold.

My argument is that raids in WoW and SWTOR have a form of matchmaking Group Finder that allows people to play a selection of raids from easy to hard difficulty for the older content. I know for SWTOR, the newer raids aren’t included in the Group Finder until later on in the year when people are more geared and experienced with the current expansion. Considering these raids are more complex than VoG and still require people to play their role at a basic level, it’s not like Destiny has to worry about people’s classes considering everyone’s primary method of doing damage is with shooting.

Within that raid, you will also get another reward for getting up to a certain point with a Group Finder group. That way, your group doesn’t have to complete the raid unless you folks decide on it. This is matchmaking in its simplest form. This is people desperately joining up with whoever they can just so they can raid. What I deem ‘very difficult’ is not the same as what you deem ‘very difficult’.
